How much does a bookkeeper cost? Here's the honest answer.

My monthly plans start at $500, and there's a $300 review-only option if you keep your own books. Where you land inside that depends on the work involved, so let me explain what actually moves the number, what's included at every level, and why the cheapest option is rarely the cheapest option.

The honest range

Full bookkeeping starts at $500 a month

Here's roughly how it breaks down. Every plan at $500 and up includes the office manager support most bookkeepers don't offer at any price.

Your office manager in a box

  • Help filling out forms, from vendor packets to government paperwork
  • Filing for business licenses and keeping the renewals on track
  • Reviewing your insurance renewals before you sign
  • General liability and workers' comp audits, handled start to finish
  • Any other question you'd ask an office manager to track down the answer to

Included with every monthly bookkeeping plan at $500 and up.

Why I cost more than most

Someone to hand the paperwork to

Every monthly bookkeeping client at $500 and up gets this, and it's a big part of why my price isn't the lowest you'll find. Cheap bookkeeping records your transactions. This is having someone to hand the paperwork to: the forms, the licenses, the insurance renewals, the audits. Whatever you'd ask an office manager to go find out, you can ask me. It's included, not an upsell.

Priced separately

Three things that are never quietly folded in

I'd rather tell you up front what costs extra than surprise you later. These are real work on top of the monthly plan, and they're priced that way.

Accounts receivable and payable

Sending your invoices, chasing what's owed, and paying your bills for you is a different job from keeping the books. It's available, and clients who need it pay noticeably more for it.

Inventory tracking

I can track inventory when you get me physical counts to work from. It's always an additional charge, priced on how much there is to track.

Cleanup and catch-up

If the books are behind or wrong when we start, there's a one-time project to get them current and correct before monthly service begins.

The market, honestly

Cheap bookkeeping costs more later

There's always someone offering to keep your books for $75 a month, and I understand the appeal. Here's the honest truth though: that price often costs more in the end. Cleanup work later isn't cheap, and in the meantime you may overpay on taxes because deductions got missed.

What you're paying me for is the oversight around the numbers, not just the data entry. I'll tell you what your reports mean, give you a heads up when something needs attention, and handle the office manager work that would otherwise land back on you.

What drives the price

Four things move the number

01

Transaction volume

More accounts and more monthly transactions mean more to categorize and reconcile. A one-person shop and a busy contractor with three cards aren't the same job.

02

Payroll

Running payroll, contractors, and the filings that come with them adds real work each month. If you have a team, that factors in.

03

Cleanup needed

If we start from a mess, there's a one-time cleanup to get you current and correct before smooth monthly service begins.

04

Industry complexity

Construction job costing, retainage, progress billing, and sales tax take more expertise than a simple service business. Complexity is priced honestly.

What you're really paying for

What CFO-level service includes that cheap bookkeeping skips

Anyone can record a transaction. The value is in everything that happens around it. This is the part that actually protects your money.

  • A real read on your numbers, not just tidy data entry
  • Problems flagged before they grow, not discovered at tax time
  • Job or profit-center costing so you know what actually makes money
  • A partner who talks directly to your CPA and speaks their language
  • CFO-level monthly reporting, with context on what it means
  • An office manager you can hand the paperwork to
